26th Annual South African Psychology Congress – First Announcement

26th Annual South African Psychology Congress – First Announcement

The question of emancipation lies simultaneously at the margins and the centre of psychological work. At the same time, we are faced with enduring legacies of marginality, exclusion and injustice, and the possibilities for liberatory consciousness and action for change. As we look thus toward a new horizon, constitutive of shifting realities and aspirations, we must take cognisance of the ways in which the historical is located within contemporary struggles, most recently highlighted by the widening of systemic social and health inequalities and injustices in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is at these confluences that psychology offers a generative space for justice-aligned, new and creative thought and practice – in alignment with African-centred subjectivities, philosophies and imaginaries. In this moment, signified by plural knowledges, traditions, narratives and social actors in African and South African psychology, the imperative to (re)imagine and (re)inscribe psychology in alignment with the continent’s realities and priorities remains ever-pressing.

Drawing inspiration from lessons learnt in crisis, and liberatory resurgences in Africa and elsewhere in the Global South, the 26th Annual South African Psychology Congress seeks to animate emancipatory impulses and potentialities within the science, practice and profession. The Congress Scientific Committee invites submissions from practitioners, scholars, researchers, educators, students, community organisers, activists, artists, and policymakers that showcase and contribute to trajectories and movements in psychology thought, practice and activism. The Committee encourages both conventional and non-traditional submissions that feature and engage cutting-edge, innovative and cross-cutting applications across the different areas of psychology.

The 26th Annual South African Psychology Congress will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa from the 26th to 28th October 2022.

PsySSA looks forward to hosting you!

Greetings from the PsySSA Presidency: 26th Annual South African Psychology Congress

Greetings from the PsySSA Presidency: 26th Annual South African Psychology Congress

The Society once again welcomes its new and returning members to another year of inspired service, generative partnership, and engaged action. We thank you for your support towards building PsySSA into the mature and vibrant organisation that it is today.

The remarkable agility, skill and wisdom with which the PsySSA leadership navigated the 2020-2021 pandemic years – and the many significant milestones that it recorded during this particularly perilous time – attests to the evolutionary growth of the Society and points as much to the potentialities of PsySSA in 2022 and beyond. Notwithstanding the pandemic uncertainties and myriad other challenges that continue to plague our country and continent, it may very well be that we are currently on the threshold of yet another transition. As the transitions of the year begin to unfold, the current leadership is alert to the lessons and insights gleaned in the last twenty-four months, and equally to the feedback provided by our members. In particular, we are excited about what we envision as emerging portals of possibility and opportunity for the Society as we look to the future. To this end, the PsySSA Executive Committee has been hard at work – deliberating, planning and organising!

Recently, we asked you about Congress2022. An overwhelming majority of our members said YES! We are thus pleased to announce that the 26th Annual South African Psychology Congress will be held from the 26th to 28th October 2022SAVE THE CONGRESS DATE and stay connected with us for further updates on the conference, as well as other 2022 member offerings.

Finally, we remember and honour our recently deceased Past President Dr Helen Dunbar-Krige. Helen embodied the values of growth, relationality and service, and implanted these with loyalty and generosity into her leadership role within PsySSA. Her passing is a significant loss for the Society, and the many people and communities in whose lives she made an indelible imprint. We extend our deepest condolences and much love to her family, friends, colleagues and students. May Helen rest in peace and power.

In Solidarity,

The PsySSA Presidency
