SAJP

South African Journal of Psychology

The South African Journal of Psychology (SAJP) is the official journal of the Psychological Society of South Africa (PsySSA)

Aims and Scope

The South African Journal of Psychology (SAJP) is the official journal of the Psychological Society of South Africa (PsySSA). The SAJP publishes peer-reviewed contributions in English from all fields of psychology. Whilst the emphasis is on empirical research, the journal also accepts theoretical and methodological papers, review articles, book reviews, and short commentaries, including commentaries on articles published in the journal. Priority is given to articles relevant to Africa and the psychological issues pertinent to this context.

Why publish in the SAJP

The SAJP is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). With the support of its publisher SAGE Publications (UK), the SAJP had some years ago migrated to an online manuscript submission and management system, using the ScholarOne programme. The SAJP is accredited by the South African Department of Higher Education and Training and is abstracted in all of the major indexing services, including the Social Science Citation Index (JCR) and Scopus. It draws scholarly submissions from both the national and international arenas. An important development for the SAJP, introduced several years ago, is the Online First publishing feature. This has brought the journal in line with all of the major international journals in ensuring that accepted manuscripts are published online once accepted, each with a digital object identifier (doi). Furthermore, SAGE offers our authors a range of opportunities to improve the chances of their articles being accessed, read, and cited, thereby enhancing their impact (See https://uk.sagepub.com/en-gb/afr/promote-your-article). The SAJP is also in the process of appointing a Social Media Editor who will assist authors published in the journal to maximise the impact of their articles.

Some of the key reasons why authors generally want to have their work published in the SAJP include:

  • The journal uses a rigorous anonymised peer review system to evaluate all submissions, so as to ensure the quality of all articles that it publishes;
  • The journal prioritises prompt reviewing and publishing;
  • The journal resonates with and has a diverse multidisciplinary readership;
  • The journal has high global exposure and visibility.

In order to encourage scholarly writing, the SAJP and PsySSA have over the past two decades facilitated a number of publishing workshops for emerging scholars. The journal offers quarterly continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities to PsySSA members at no extra cost.
